    Biographical history

    Charles Hepburn Scott was born on November 29, 1886, at Newmilns, near Glasgow, Scotland. Between 1905 and 1909 he studied at the Glasgow School of Art, earning his diploma in 1909. He continued his studies by travelling throughout Europe, and more formally, under the tutelage of Jean Delville in Brussels, Belgium in 1910.;Scott came to Canada and settled in Calgary in 1912. Before long War broke out and Scott served overseas with the Canadian Expeditionary Force (1915-1919) and was wounded at Lens.;In 1916, Charles Scott married Jean Smith Melvin, they had one son: John Charles Melvin.;Between 1914 and 1924 Scott served as Art Supervisor in the Calgary school system, holding a similar position in Vancouver for a portion of this time.;Scott was the President of the B.C. Society of Fine Arts from 1921-1922. ;In 1926 Scott founded the Vancouver School of Art and was Director of the institution until 1952. During this time Scott did much to develop a group of progressive painters in B.C. and was a member of the B.C. Art League, the Canadian Society of Graphic Arts, and the Canadian Group of Painters.;From 1930 to 1947 Scott was also a lecturer on Art Education Methods at the University of British Columbia. Though best known as an educator, Scott exhibited regularly in Canadian Group Exhibitions. His work is represented in the permanent collections of the Vancouver Art Gallery, the Art Gallery of Greater Victoria, the National Gallery of Canada, and Glenbow, Calgary.;Charles Scott died on June 25, 1964.
