Leaf, Olive Esther

Olive Esther Leaf (nee Mccormick) was born in Saskatchewan on October 28, 1901, later relocating to British Columbia. She married Thomas Leaf in Fort Langley in 1924. The couple had settled in Whonnock, where Olive became a life-long community activist. She was deeply involved with the Women's Institute and Whonnock Hall, also participating in the Whonnock and Maple Ridge fairs. Olive and Thomas were well-known congregants at the United Church in Whonnock and became a central member of the community.

Olive died in Maple Ridge on November 2, 1995.

Morse, David Garnet

Dr. David Garnet Morse was born on May 7, 1883 in Lawrencetown, Annapolis County, Nova Scotia, the son of Leander Rupert Morse and Ellen Mary Fitch. David relocated from Nova Scotia to British Columbia as a young man, having become a medical doctor. He married Bernice Louise Robertson in Vancouver on Mar 1, 1913. He later settled in Maple Ridge, becoming the first doctor in the growing town.

David passed away in New Westminster, British Columbia at the age of 75 on October 29, 1958.

Broe, Lawrence

Lawrence Broe was born in Buxton, North Dakota, USA to John Larson Broe and Serena Broe (nee Satre). The family settled in Anyox, British Columbia when Lawrence was a child. Broe would become a doctor and Chief Medical Officer in Anyox until 1921, when he relocated with his young family to Yarrow and finally Hammond, where he became the first doctor in the area.

Broe married May Alice Elliott on September 11, 1913 in Okanagan Landing and the pair had a son, Howard Elliott, born ca. 1916.

Broe remained a doctor until his death from a cerebral hemorrhage at New Westminster on June 25, 1949.

Deryl (Dal) James Michael McCrindle was born in Vancouver in 1945. He attended Union College and was among the first graduates of the Vancouver School of Theology (after Union College and Anglican Theological College amalgamated). McCrindle was ordained by B.C. Conference in 1972. He served charges in rural Manitoba (1972-1974) and Winnipeg (1974-1977) before returning to British Columbia. He continued in pastoral ministry at First United, Prince Rupert (1977-1985); St. David’s, West Vancouver (1985-1990); St. Andrew’s-Wesley, Vancouver (1990-1991); St. Giles, Vancouver (1991-1996); and St. Andrew’s (Haney), Maple Ridge (1996-2006). McCrindle served as president of BC Conference (1984-1985) and as chair of both Prince Rupert and Vancouver-Burrard presbyteries. After retirement in 2006, he continued his ministry, serving as an associate minister at West Vancouver and St. David’s United Churches and as chaplain to the Royal Canadian Legion in West Vancouver. While in the north, he was adopted by the Tsimshian community at Lax Kw’alaams and became a member of the “wolf” clan of that community.

Beckett, Ernest William

E.W. Beckett was born in Quebec in 1857 and came to Maple Ridge, B.C., in 1895, where he started a small brickyard. He was municipal clerk for Maple Ridge from 1895 to 1912, when he became Crown Timber Agent at New Westminster. During the years 1925 to 1929, he was the Returning Officer for the Municipality of Maple Ridge. Beckett died in 1935.
