Biographical history
Andreas Schroeder was born in Germany and settled in the Fraser Valley in 1952. He first gained national attention as a poet and founding member of the West Coast Surrealist School of writing. He has also published a wide variety of fiction and nonfiction, the latter including a history of the Mennonites in Canada, a history of Mission, B.C., and an analysis of the writing industry in Alberta. Schroeder has taught creative writing at Simon Fraser University, the University of British Columbia, the University of Victoria, and Fraser Valley College. He was a founding member of the League of Canadian Poets, a founder and early chairman of the Writers' Union of Canada, a founding member of the Federation of B.C. Writers, and the founder/chairman of the Public Lending Rights Commission of Canada.

The fonds consists of Schroeder's literary manuscripts, radio plays, filmscripts, manuscripts by others, personal correspondence, financial records, and printed material which chronicle his development and contributions as a writer, journalist, broadcaster, editor, translator, and literary/cultural activist. Included among the subjects documented in the papers are: Schroeder's published and unpublished fiction and nonfiction works, including short prose, novellas, poems, translations, a prison memoir, literary columns, and feature articles; production of documentaries for the CBC radio show "Ideas"; publication of the literary magazine of translation "Contemporary Literature in Translation"; the author's nine-month prison sojurn; the founding of the League of Canadian Poets and the Writers' Union of Canada; and, the establishment of the Public Lending Rights Commission of Canada.
