George Hubert Bird was born in England and married Florence Amelia Longley. The Birds lived in Port Angeles (Washington), Vancouver, Harrison Hot Springs, and Nanaimo before settling in the Alberni Valley. He owned a sawmill in Alberni and also worked as an engineer at the old Paper Mill located at Paper Mill Dam. He was an alderman on the first city council of Port Alberni and also wrote historical articles for various newspapers. Both Florence and Doris Bird were born in Alberni, B.C.

The fonds consists of personal records of George Bird including correspondence, bills, receipts, Christmas cards, diary (1902), copies of newspaper and magazine article written by Bird, scrapbooks and an historical account by Bird of early life in Alberni and Port Alberni; business records of George Bird including monthly timebooks (1899-1913) and records of customer orders (1910-1915) for Bird's sawmill operations. Fonds includes school certificates of Doris and Florence Bird and Doris Bird's historical accounts of sawmills in the Alberni area.
