William Henry Brett was born on August 25, 1895 in Joe Batt's Arm, Fogo Island, Newfoundland, to Peter and Annie (Evely) Brett. He came to Prince Rupert in 1919 after being discharged from the Royal Naval Reserve. He entered the halibut industry as a fisherman in 1924 and continued until 1940 when he became secretary of the Halibut Marketing Board. He served on the board and helped form the Prince Rupert Fishermen's Co-operative Association where he was manager of the plant from 1944 to 1945. He was president of the Deep Sea Fishermen's Union and Prince Rupert Fishermen's Credit Union, and was involved with the BC Fishermen's Co-operative Federation and the Pacific Coast Mutual Marine Insurance Company. He was an alderman for the City of Prince Rupert from 1943, and from 1945-1949 was an MLA for the Cooperative Commonwealth Federation. In the 1950s, he served on the provincial labour conciliation board in Prince Rupert. He helped form a senior citizens home and was a member of the Freemasons, Tsimpsean Lodge No. 58. William was predeceased by his wife, Mary Jane (Godwin), in 1942 and he died on April 30, 1972. The couple had one son, E. Allan.
