Biographical history
William C. Coatham was born in Durham County in Ontario in 1864 and arrived in New Westminster in 1886. Having been educated as a teacher he was appointed to the city teaching staff at the old Central School and became principal of the school that would later become the John Robson School in 1887. He occupied this position until his retirement in 1929. He died in 1932. The Coatham family consisted of William and his wife, Margaret, two daughters, Minnie and Viola, and one son, Robert. Both Robert and his sister Minnie carried the surname Johnson. Minnie Johnson married Alexander Sivewright, son of the physician, James Alexander Sivewright in 1922.

Scope and content
Fonds consists of a photo album that containing early portraits of Coatham family members; loose photographs, some of which are school class photos; an autograph book of Minnie Johnson, a document signed by the minister E. Robson, acknowledging the marriage between James Alexander Sivewright and Harriet Clarkson; two letters addressed to William Coatham; and newspaper clippings.
