Scope and content

Series consists of death and burial records of Chinese persons in Victoria, BC. Beginning in 1903, Chinese persons were buried at the Chinese Cemetery at Harling Point in Oak Bay. The series consists of the the following record types:

Medical certificates of death, issued under the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act, for Chinese persons in Victoria. Information collected on death certificate includes: name of deceased, age of deceased, sex of deceased, date of examination, location of examination, cause of death, examiner's name, profession and residence. Entries are in English

Burial permits, in most cases attached to death certificates. Information collected on permit includes: registration number, name of deceased, age in years and months, where born, where died, date of death, day and hour of burial, cemetery row and lot numbers, name of undertaker, burial fee, cause of death and attending physician. Information in English and Chinese, including additional personal information in Chinese, such as more detail about birthplace.

Burial permits issued by the Chinese Benevolent Cemetery Company are addressed to the Caretaker of the Chinese Benevolent Cemetery, also indicate the hour burial is to take place, and are signed by the President.
