        History

The Delta Centennial (1979) Committee was created by the Delta Municipal Council to propose, promote, and coordinate celebrations for the 100th anniversary of the incorporation of the Municipal District of Delta (1879-1979), and to advise council about celebration events. The committee was granted a budget by the council, who encouraged the committee to obtain further funds through fund raising and grant submissions to the provincial and federal governments. The first meeting of the committee was held June 1, 1978, with Alderman Lois Jackson as Chairman. Other members appointed to the committee were Leslie Abramson (who became chair Nov. 29, 1978), Neil McLeod, Cecilia Duncan, Gay Trevitt, R. J. Smith, Edgar Dunning, Leonard Haier, Charles Giordano, and Frances Woodbury. Bus Evans, as Director of Leisure Services, also sat on the committee. The Committee's major centennial projects included the Centennial Run, Centennial Picnic, Civic Banquet, Centennial Ball, Time capsule, heritage markers, and fund raising activities such as selling centennial coins and spoons. The committee also supported the opening of a Delta Arts Centre and Delta Archives, and published a pictorial history booklet, "The Delta Centenary 1879-1979". Besides planning its own celebrations, the Committee encouraged Delta community groups to plan centennial oriented projects, and invited clubs and organizations to submit events to the committee for advise, promotional materials, and minimal financial support. In 1980, the committee passed surplus funds generated from centennial activities to Municipal Council with recommendations for how it should be spent. A police boat was eventually purchased for the Delta Police. The Committee was dissolved in March 1980.
