Biographical history
The Dept. of Transport was established on November 2, 1936 when the former Dept. of Marine, Dept. of Railways and Canals, and the Civil Aviation Branch of the Dept of National Defence were merged together (SC 1936, c. 34). In addition to its railway and civil aviation responsibilities, the Dept. of Transport was responsible for the coasts including the management of lighthouses, management of harbours, inspection of steamboats and registration of shipping.

The fonds consists of log books from the engine room and Chief Engineers log for the CGS Estevan (1934,1935,1941,1942,1951-1952), photographs of lifeboats, lighthouses, Canadian Coast Guard vessels, life stations, and beacons, and a plan (1860) for the Race Rock Lighthouse.
