    Biographical history

    Born in Leeds, England, Dorothy Blakey Smith immigrated to Canada with her family in 1913. An outstanding student, she was a member of the University of British Columbiaʹs first graduating class in Honours English (1921). Smith earned M.A.s from UBC (1922) and the University of Toronto (1926). She obtained her doctorate from the University of London (1933), writing a thesis entitled ʺA Study of the Publications of the Minerva Press, 1790‐1820ʺ. Smith was appointed to the Department of English at UBC in 1935 and, in 1957, joined the staff of the Provincial Archives as a researcher and editor, remaining there until her retirement in 1968. She received an honorary degree of Doctor in Letters from UBC in 1978.
