Biographical history
Frank Fisher was born in Lincolnshire, England, in 1885 and emigrated with his family to Canada in 1893. His parents lived in Ganges, then in Victoria. Frank moved to Australia from 1908 to 1912. He returned to Victoria and was sent to Deas Island Cannery by the B.C. Cannery to act as bookkeeper. He volunteered for overseas service in 1915, returning in 1919. In 1920, he leased Deas Island and started farming there. In 1921, he married Winnie Frances of Ladner. In 1922, they bought the land and remained there until 1940, when they moved to Ladner. The Fishers had two children: Bert and Barbara. Frank fished until 1945, when he became secretary of the Delta School Board. He retired in 1955, and died in 1959.
Custodial history
These records were donated by Mrs. Mildred McKerracher in 1997; they were found in a shed.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of a diary kept by Frank Fisher. Part of the diary appears to be written at the time he was a bookkeeper at Deas Island in 1912; this section of the diary is written in pen. Other entries written in pencil chronicle the day to day activities of farm life. It is likely, therefore that this section was written after Mr. Fisher returned from the war and started farming Deas Island. The fonds also consists of a letter found in Mr. Fisher's diary, written to him by a relative or friend, Kathleen, living overseas.
