History
In 1951, Dr. Max Stern, director of Dominion Gallery (now, Galerie Dominion) in Montreal, was introduced to the art work of E.J. Hughes while arranging an exhibition of western painters. Under the auspices of the Dominion Gallery, Stern signed a contract with Hughes to become the sole agent for Hughes' work. The contract, which is still in force, made it possible for Hughes to devote himself full-time to his painting. Hughes was born in North Vancouver in 1913. He attended the Vancouver School of Art (now Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design) where he studied with Frederick Varley, Charles H. Scott and Jock Macdonald. After working as a war artist during WW II, he settled on Vancouver Island and continued to develop his art.
