    Biographical history

George Mayer was a long-time resident of the Port Clements area of the Queen Charlotte Islands. He was born in Arkansas and fought in the Spanish-American War, before coming to B.C. as a prospector. In 1907, he arrived on the Queen Charlotte Islands, clearing land and working as a surveyor. He served in World War I with the 48th Battalion and was wounded at Ypres. He operated a farm near Port Clements and occasionally did road work. He cleared many early trails around the northeast side of Graham Island. In 1929, he was appointed Stipendiary Magistrate of the County of Prince Rupert and was also appointed Coroner. He moved to Surrey, B.C., in 1955.
