The fonds consists firstly, of correspondence, incoming and outgoing (1945-2003): business, personal, and professional, including among the correspondents: Earle Birney, Susan Musgrave, Howard O'Hagan, P. K. Page, Jane Rule, Robin Skelton, Phyllis Webb, George Woodcock, and many others; secondly, of manuscripts of her own work - principally, her many works of poetry, drama, reviews, and prose, including her books: Journey Back To Peshawar ; Memory of Elsewhere-and the play A Family of Sorts. There are also manuscript of some of her colleagues - including J. Michael Yates, Michael Walbank, Theresa Kishkan, and Robin Skelton; thirdly, of materials from several literary organizations that she was involved with, including the Victoria Literary Arts Festival and the League of Canadian Poets - Women's Caucus ; fourthly, of ephemera, including photographs. The fonds consists of correspondence between Rona Murray and Phyllis Serota and a first draft typescript of "Adam and Eve in Middle Age".

The fonds consists of records documenting activities of Robert Mayhew and family, including subject files relating to Mayhew's career as Canadian Ambassador to Japan and as Minister of Fisheries, records of Grace Logan Mayhew, including diaries and notebooks on Japanese arts and crafts kept by Mrs. Mayhew on sojourns in Rome and Japan and material relating to her funeral in 1967; photographs of visits of Japanese dignitaries and the British royal family, as well as portraits of Canadian prime ministers; certificates of Mayhew's honorary Doctor of Laws degree, Freeman of Oak Bay and Victoria, and appointment of Mayhew as Minister of Fisheries and as Ambassador to Japan.

The fonds consists of architectural plans of Samuel Maclure for homes in Victoria, other B.C. locations, and out of province locations, as well as lists of people who commissioned homes by Maclure, including construction contracts. Fonds includes plans by English designer George P. Bankart; plans by H. D. Day; plans by other architects; and watercolours by Maclure of houses, proposed houses and alterations. The fonds also consists of 8 negatives made from copies of original drawings of Hatley Park and 3 photocopies of sketches of a bungalow designed for Mrs. Maltwood.

Keith Macgowan fonds

The fonds consists of holograph correspondence written primarily to his mother from the trenches and war front in Europe, together with a typescript transcription of the letters; a photograph of Macgowan with (apparently) two members of his battalion; programme for a Brussels Ball; clippings; and 11 maps used by Macgowan to direct his troops in battle. Also included are aerial photographs of three regions of north-west France together with a map of north-west France (Denain region). Some of the photographs have holograph additions to them, largely for the purpose of identification of towns or other significant features.

The collection consists of two manuscripts:-- "The Fathers' Indian Mutiny Letters, 1857 - 1859" which consists of Xeroxed, typed transcripts of letters from J. H. Wyatt, writing from India, to his wife, Jane, "Jeanie" in Aberdeen. There are 77 letters plus a note: "Maude's Battery at the Relief of Lucknow 25 Set. 1857. By Lt. Col. M.E.S. Laws. OBE. M.C. R.A. (ret'd.) Taken from the R.A. Journal, July, 1953", 6 pp. The second is "Military Memories: Part I. First World War,1914-19; Part II. Mesopotamia, Egypt, Turkey, 1919-23; Part III. Royal Air Force, 1923-28; Part IV, Second World War 1938-1945 by W. F. A. Preston, Major late Royal Artillery, Newmarket, Ontario, 1965." 137 pp.

The collection consists of: 1) Four vellum leaves by various calligraphers taken from a Flemish Psalter, two French Book of Hours, and a French Bible. 2) Ten manuscript leaves by various calligraphers in France, England, Italy, and Spain, including leaves from a Bible, a calendar, Missals, a Book of Hours, a charter, a litany from a Book of Hours, a Psalter, and a Breviary. 3) MS of John Lydgate's "Fall of Princes" (ca. 1431-1438). 247 slides were made for a digitizing project, from which 10 CDs have been produced plus a backup set. There is also a CD for the index to the web site. 4) MS of "Bartholomaeus Anglicus" (ca, 1240-1250), consisting of extracts from his encyclopaedia "De Proprietatibus Rerum (On the Properties of Things). 5) Medieval Fragments: 13th Century Collection (ca. 1200-1300), consists of 7 folia fragments from 5 sources most were recovered pastedowns from later books. 6) Manuscrit religeuse. 7) Court record from the beginning of the reign of James I. It passed through private hands. The document is in Latin court hand and notes the transfer of land from Thomas and Robert Whitney to a knight. 8) Handwritten letter to William Paston from Thomas Jermy dated 31 January 1565. The letter has been repaired, with a slight loss of text. Also included are a photocopy of the letter; a typed transcription of the letter, made in 1974 by H.L. Douch (Curator of the Royal Cornwall Institution) and amended at the suggestion of Jean M. Kennedy (City and County Archivist, Norwich), together with comments by Kennedy and Dorothy Sweet; a handwritten transcription of the original, by Douch; handwritten notes and background material by Sweet; two typed, signed letters to Sweet from Kennedy.

The letters also mention Dannie Abse, Herbert Read and Kenneth Rexroth.

The collection consists of audio tapes of 120 interviews that Lawrence conducted between 1980 and 1990 with naval personnel, several female officers and ratings. Fonds includes several interview transcripts, correspondence relating to one interview, a captain's night order book (HMCS Portage), and the text of an address. The additional fonds consist of manuscripts for books and articles written by Hal Lawrence, correspondence, clippings and photographs related to his navel career. The fonds also include personal and professional documents and correspondence, navel oral history material, several navel maps and transparencies, miscellaneous publications and ephemera.
