The collection consists of photographs of people, events, organizations, and institutional activities relating to the Japanese-Canadian community, primarily in British Columbia. Many of the photographs depict scenes of Japanese-Canadian life in internment and relocation camps during and after World War II.

The collection consists of rare and difficult to obtain limited distribution documents relating to specific case studies, most of which have been printed and distributed by governments and industrial agencies. They generally contain environmental data, and may have interpretive sections. Some documents contain copies of government permits and associated correspondence. The collection is arranged in five primary research subjects: Pulp and Paper Mills, Toxicolocy, Victoria Sewage, Coast and Island Mines, and Regional Collections. Each subject is divided into case studies. Within each case study, documents are arranged in alphabetical order by author.

The collection consists of nautical charts created by over forty institutions, including the Canadian Hydrographic Service, the Admiralty Hydrographic Office, the U.S. Navy Hydrographic Office, the Danish Hydrographic Office, the London Board of Trade and the British East Indian Company. The largest number focus on waters around British Columbia, along with a number of surveys charting the coast of Alaska. The collection also includes charts, including Admiralty charts, of water of the United States, Europe, Africa, and Australia and New Zealand. The collection also contains LORAN charts, meteorological charts, fleet reviews and shipwreck charts.

The records in this research collection were created and received by three separate juridical entities carrying out three different administrative functions. Firstly, the research collection includes records created and received by the crew of the St. Roch and other members of the RCMP and its governing body during the ships active existence. Secondly, the collection includes records that were created and received by the Vancouver Maritime Museum regarding the restoration and ongoing preservation and display of the ship. The collection also includes the records created and received by Parks Canada pertaining to the time during which that organization was responsible for the care and display of the ship. Finally this collection includes records relating to the fundraising voyage of the RCMP vessel the Nadon, during the period in which in was renamed the St. Roch II, as well as the records of the ice breaker the Simon Fraser which accompanied the Nadon on this voyage.;The records relate to the building of the St. Roch, the activities carried out by its crew members during its active career, the retirement of the St. Roch to Vancouver, the construction of the A-frame shelter, the preservation of the ship, exhibition of the ship and related items, as well as records created through research to support these curatorial activities. Environmental Associations, 1972-2000; BC Environmental newsletters, 1970-2000; Community Associations, 1990-2000; Capital Regional District, 1990-2000; Foundations, 1994-2000; Issues, 1973-2000; Land preservation, 1990-2000; Awards, 1992-2001; Photographs. The Alpha-Numeric system was established by Derrick Mallard in the early years of his environmental work. The vast majority of the files were left un-filed, and constitute the Mallards research files relating to their C.A.S.E. work. These have been arranged in series reflecting the subject groupings of his early alpha-numeric system. Administrative files relating to C.A.S.E. have been arranged in the B.C. Environmental Associations series. Approximately 300 reports and publications have been transferred to Special Collections, and cataloged as the Derrick Mallard Collection. They are on a wide variety of environmental subjects, including: water, sewage, transportation, parks, farming, noise, fishing, endangered species and global issues.
