Yearbooks

Part of New Westminster Council of Women fonds

Series consists of yearbooks created by the New Westminster Local Council of Women. The year books were released annually, and recorded the history of the council, past presidents, current officers, affiliated societies, life members, reports from the president, secretary and standing committees, financial statements, and the minutes of the annual meeting. The year books also contain advertisements from businesses in New Westminster.

Series consists of records created while managing the finances of the New Westminster Local Council of Women. Two volumes (1921 – 47, 1947 – 60), entitled Treasurer’s Book, record received funds, expenditures, and disbursements. Along with this is a file containing receipts and cheque books, dated early 1960s, from both the Local Council as well as other organizations. There is also a folder containing a financial report from 1983, giving an idea of their expenditures as well as proposed budget.

Series consists of four volumes containing records created while recording the names of attendants to New Westminster Local Council of Women functions. A single volume (1932 – 74) entitled Visitors, recording the attendants of various Local Council of Women functions, including meetings, teas, receptions, and anniversaries. Three volumes (1922 – 28, 1927 – 32, 1940 – 41) entitled Roll Book, which record the names of groups of women and their attendance to meetings. The groups recorded include presidents of different organizations, executive officers of the Council, affiliated societies and delegates, Loyal True Blue, YWCA, ladies aids, and others.

Series consists of one volume and one folder of correspondence created by the New Westminster Local Council of Women. The correspondence volume, which is from a much earlier date (1898 – 1923) contains hand-written copies of letters sent to people by the Council, as well as the replies. The folder is of a more contemporary nature (1970 – 1985), and contains typed carbon copies of correspondence. The range of subjects discussed in the correspondence is very wide, encompassing everything from formal invitations to tea to concerns regarding orphans. Near the end of the volume, the content of letters received is no longer copied, only the sender and a vague subject are retained.

Series consists of minutes created by the New Westminster Local Council of Women during the course of their meetings. The minutes reveal the changing concerns of the Local Council of Women, comprised of a large variety of topics of interest to the Council. The minutes record information such as the election of a president and various chairs, resolutions on subjects of concern, reports from members, and the Council’s discussions on fulfilling their duties. All fourteen volumes are handwritten, although some of the later volumes include the occasional typed minutes, and all have maintained good condition.

Parts of film purchased by Norman include multiple 1920s Hollywood short clips on various topics.

These films feature scenes and short films that have been commercially produced that Norman Lidster purchased over the years. The films appear to feature scenes that have been shot between the 1910s to 1950s. Most films are travel videos featuring views of multiple towns, cities, and countries around the world. Other films are types of news reels featuring British royal weddings, royal visits and coronations (Also featuring coronation of a Maharaja). Also featured are scenes from the First World War with T.E. Lawrence and Field Marshal Allenby. Furthermore, some films feature stories of various themes.

These films have been shot and edited by Norman Lidster. Films feature a variety of subjects and themes. Many films feature scenes shot from Lidster's trips across British Columbia, Eastern Canada and the United States. Many present scenes of his family and different New Westminster celebrations including, opening of the Queenborough Bridge, opening of Irving House as a museum, scenes with the Governor-General Vincent Massey, May Days, and royal visits: 1939, 1951, 1959. Some videos might have been filmed by the Springate family, although this has not been confirmed. This series has been further sub-divided into a series (A.1) featuring only films depicting May Day (some parts on these May Day films do have subjects other then May Day and are clearly indicated).
