The records in this research collection were created and received by three separate juridical entities carrying out three different administrative functions. Firstly, the research collection includes records created and received by the crew of the St. Roch and other members of the RCMP and its governing body during the ships active existence. Secondly, the collection includes records that were created and received by the Vancouver Maritime Museum regarding the restoration and ongoing preservation and display of the ship. The collection also includes the records created and received by Parks Canada pertaining to the time during which that organization was responsible for the care and display of the ship. Finally this collection includes records relating to the fundraising voyage of the RCMP vessel the Nadon, during the period in which in was renamed the St. Roch II, as well as the records of the ice breaker the Simon Fraser which accompanied the Nadon on this voyage.;The records relate to the building of the St. Roch, the activities carried out by its crew members during its active career, the retirement of the St. Roch to Vancouver, the construction of the A-frame shelter, the preservation of the ship, exhibition of the ship and related items, as well as records created through research to support these curatorial activities. The collection consists of a combination of materials relating to the Union Steamship Company of British Columbia that has been collected over the years by the Vancouver Maritime Museum as well as documents that have been donated to the museum by Gerald Rushton, author of two books on the company titled Whistle Up the Inlet and Echoes of the Whistle; Arthur Twigg, author of the book Union Steamship Remembered; Harold Cecil Biles, former employee; and James Richard Southworth, former Marine Constable. The collection includes financial reports, maps, schedule notes, special operating circulars, company memos, sailing guides, menus, brochures, research notes, correspondence, newspaper clippings, magazine articles, manuscripts, assorted ephemera, photographs and audio cassettes. The Vancouver Maritime Museum Archives collection consists of archival records donated to the Vancouver Maritime Museum from a wide variety of sources over a period of fifty years since the museum opened. Some of the archival records were originally processed and filed as the Library "ephemera" collection. They have since been removed from the Library database and processed as part of this collection.;The collection consists of correspondence; merchant service and naval certificates; reports and research notes; journals, diaries and logbooks; ledgers; vessel construction plans; photographs and negatives; newsletters, and oral histories recorded on DVDs and audiocassette tapes.

W.E. Darwell fonds

The fonds consists of records related to William E. Darwells maritime career with the Royal Navy until his retirement and includes maritime service records; his hand-written logbook while serving on the H.M.S. Ganges in Esquimalt (1859-1861); and newspaper clippings and records related to the collision of the H.M.S. Tyne while under Darwells command. Also included is correspondence with family and friends; naval crests from various ship stationary; memorial dinner menus and postcards; and photographs (1 framed) of Darwell.

Collection consists of textual and graphic materials related to the life and work of W. Carl Tyack, a member of the RCMP who supplied the St. Roch. The album depicts Tyack's personal and professional life. Accession also contains Tyack's obituary and 6 photos taken of the St. Roch by a member of the expedition from Weyburn, SK and may have been processed by Tyack.

Included are photographs, negatives, personal correspondence, certificates, identification cards, service reference letters, letters of appointment, certificates of discharge, notebooks, crew lists, copies of logbook entries, accounts and wages forms, doctors letters for various seamen, and ship repair lists.;The fonds is arranged into two series: Personal papers (1821-1962, predominantly 1916-1962); and Maritime service records (1904-1958, predominantly 1916-1944).

Collection consists of envelopes cacheted (stamped or imprinted) with the names and logos of ships in the Canadian, British and American naval and maritime service collected by John M. MacFarlane by sending requests to the various vessels and asking them reply using the envelopes he provided. With few exceptions, the materials were posted between 1977 and 1979.;Most of the envelopes have ships mailroom cancellations. A few of the envelopes have captains privilege franking (signature of a ships official rather than a stamp). Also included are relevant items such as pictures or postal cards showing the vessels or other records related to the vessel (usually brochures/pamphlets).

The collection consists of textual records, including ships plans, timetables, publicity brochures, onboard publications menus and published logs, notebooks, newspaper clippings, travel brochures, periodical articles and some commemorative materials. The collection also includes many post cards and other photographs. In addition, it includes research notes and manuscript materials relating to his publications on ships, correspondence related to marine matters and personal memoirs.;Whenever possible, shipping materials, i.e. plans, photographs, timetables and other ephemera have been interfiled in the existing Photograph and Ephemera files of the VMM. Each item has been identified as from the W. Kaye Lamb donation, and box lists have been created listing the donation at the item level.;The remaining records have been arranged into six series: Personal papers and biographic materials, 1904- 2006; Correspondence, 1936 1988; Research, 1920 1988; Publications, 1967 1986; Miscellaneous, 1907 1990; and The Vancouver Conference, April 23-26, 1992.

The majority of the fonds are textual records, but there are some photographs that document his childhood, family members and friends, and marine vessels. Included in the fonds are correspondence (documenting his activities and relationships with family and friends while stationed overseas during World War II), research notebooks, scrapbooks, and ephemera relating to B.C. history and the maritime history of Vancouver, newspaper articles from the Vancouver Daily Province, and unpublished drafts of manuscripts and short stories.

Vickie Jensen fonds

The records in this fonds relate to Jensens research for the book Saltwater Women at Work. She began her research in 1993, interviewing 110 women who had all earned their living working on boats or ships in British Columbia. These women worked on vessels of all types: deep sea ships and coastal freighters, charter yachts, fish boats, ferries, Coast Guard and DFO vessels, tugboats and water taxis. The women held positions that included deckhands and skippers, oilers and engineers, mates and radio operators, cooks and marine instructors. The women worked the marine waterways throughout British Columbia, from the Queen Charlottes and Prince Rupert in the north, to Rainy Bay on the west coast, and the Lower Mainland to the south. As an outcome of her interviews, Jensen decided to broaden the focus of the project from a look at interesting individuals to include the role and impact of maritime women both in BC and nationally.;The fonds is arranged into three series: Interview transcripts (1.1 Worked on fishing boats, and 1.2 Worked on non-fishing boats); Photographs and negatives; and Interview tapes.;Records in the fonds consist of interview cassette tapes and corresponding transcripts, and photographs taken by Jensen for use in the book.

This collection consists primarily of interdepartmental correspondence and other organizational records created by the Pacific Coast branch of the Canadian National Steamships Company (CNSS). Records were created primarily between the 1920s and the 1970s, during the CNSS' years of operation. Some records (see series 23-26) are not CNSS organizational records, and were added to the collection by other interested donors. The series' records pertain to the company's operations in Vancouver, Victoria, and the West Coast of Canada.

Series 1-21 of the collection consist of the CNSS' organizational records; they were donated by the CNSS, and arranged according to the original order indicated by the markings on the company's original file folders. Series 22 consists of miscellaneous organizational records arranged by the archivist. Series 23-26 consist of a collection of ephemera, promotional materials, photographs, and articles that were arranged on the basis of content.

The W.B. & M.H. Chung Maritime History Collection consists of archival records including pamphlets, newsletters, reports, notes, deck plans, cabin plans, menus, promotional brochures, newspaper articles, baggage tags, tickets, day programs, builders plans, sailing schedules, and passenger lists for coastal liners on the Pacific such as the C.N.R. ships (formerly the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway), the Union Steamship Company, Pacific Steamship Co., and the Dollar Line; and the great ocean shipping lines such as Cunard, French Line, Italian Line, North German Lloyd, P & O, Union Castle, United States, White Star Lines that plied international waters in the 20th century. The collection also includes research notes and scrapbooks on various types of vessels (tug boats, sail boats, tow boats, and shipwrecks) along with historical information related to local BC maritime history and WW1 and WW2. The collection also includes graphic material comprised of vessel photographs and negatives, postcards, advertising and promotional posters, commercial artwork, artifacts, and maritime books and periodicals.
