The collection consists of a range of documentary forms, including: reports, theses, newspaper clippings, newsletters, publications, correspondence, manuals, plans and drawings, directories, inventories, procedures, programmes, annuals, invitations, motion pictures, personal narratives, staff lists, minutes, study notes, scrapbooks, ephemera, and photographs depicting aspects of social and administrative life at the hospital and school.

The collection is arranged into ten series that reflect original collections maintained by the RHHS, and are organized by media type or content. See the Arrangement note below for more information.

CA CCOQ C5-S01 · Series · [191-] - 2008
Part of Riverview Hospital Historical Society collection

The series consists of photographs predominantly depicting aspects of social and administrative life at Riverview Hospital and the School of Psychiatric Nursing as well as and Colony Farm. The photographs in the series portray the everyday social life of Riverview Hospital staff and volunteers as well as events, meetings, gatherings, and kinds of work they undertook. Additionally the series depicts scenes of Riverview Hospital's many buildings in varying states of completion, portraits of prize winning livestock (Holstein cattle, Clydesdale and Belgian horses), scenes during periods of flooding at Colony Farm, and equipment, vehicles, and technology used by the Hospital.

The glass plate negatives in Subseries 01 and 04 are known to have been taken by W.J. Moore, a prominent Vancouver photographer. It is possible that the entire collection was taken by W.J. Moore, although it has not been possible to confirm. Some photographs in Subseries 02 are thought to depict the Provincial Hospital for the Insane in New Westminster. Photographs in Subseries 04 are also thought to depict the Dominion Experimental Farm in Agassiz, B.C.

Record types consists largely of silver gelatin negatives in large format cellulose acetate sheets and cellulose acetate film strips. The subseries also contains a collection of glass plate negatives, chromogenic colour negative film strips and large format sheets, silver gelatin DOP prints, a photograph album, and a scrapbook.

Part of Riverview Hospital Historical Society collection

The subseries consists of photographs thought to have been taken by W.J.Moore although it is possible they were taken by another photographer. The assumption of provenance has been assumed based on the context in which the negatives were found. It has not been possible to confirm. The photographs depict the buildings, livestock, farm workers (likely Essondale patients), and employees of Colony Farm and Essondale (Riverview Hospital). The subjects consist primarily of cows and horses, as Colony Farm was known across the province for the quality of its livestock. It was awarded a master breeder shield in 1930 from the British Columbia Branch of Holstein Canada. Many of the agricultural photographs also show Essondale's West Lawn building at various points in its construction.

Part of Riverview Hospital Historical Society collection

The subseries consists of photographs assumed to have been taken by W.J.Moore because of the context in which they were found, although it has not been possible to confirm. It was suggested in documentation accompanying the transfer, that the photographs depict the buildings and livestock of the Dominion Experimental Farm in Agassiz, BC; however, the buildings do not match other available photographs of the farm in Agassiz and therefore, it has not been possible to confirm the location. The glass negatives were found in Summerland, BC. It is possible that the photographs depict the Experimental Farm in Summerland; however, the buildings also do not match existing photographs of the Summerland farm, so it has not been possible to confirm either potential location.

CA DMA CR-32 · Fonds · ca. 1912-1930

The fonds consists of a diary kept by Frank Fisher. Part of the diary appears to be written at the time he was a bookkeeper at Deas Island in 1912; this section of the diary is written in pen. Other entries written in pencil chronicle the day to day activities of farm life. It is likely, therefore that this section was written after Mr. Fisher returned from the war and started farming Deas Island. The fonds also consists of a letter found in Mr. Fisher's diary, written to him by a relative or friend, Kathleen, living overseas.

CA DMA CR-42 · Fonds · 1883-1944

The fonds consists of an accounts journal and seventeen daily journals kept by John Honeyman (1845-1926) and his son Douglas Ramsey Honeyman (1886-1968) from 1883 to 1944, which describe farming the Honeyman family farm at Eden, Manitoba, from 1883 to 1895, the farm at Gulfside near Port Guichon from 1896 to 1902, and the East Delta farm from 1903 to 1914 and 1920 to 1944. Entries from 1883 to about 1905 were made by John Honeyman, and from 1906 to 1944 by Douglas Honeyman. John Honeyman's daily entries are more detailed than those made by Douglas and record farm work and family activities, especially those of the Honeyman children. The journals describe visits with family and neighbors, trips to New Westminster and Vancouver, weather observations, illness, entertainment and social activities. Entries about farm work record seasonal activities for tilling, planting and harvesting grains and potatoes; raising livestock; improving and building farm buildings, fences, etc.; and employing workers such as East Indians and Chinese and their wages. Entries also refer to community political events and frictions, and to work done on shared community infrastructure such as dykes, drainage ditches and roads.
