The fonds consists of lists of death and burial records of Chinese persons in Victoria, BC, 1902-1923; Chinese deceased in Canada, 1937; leave permits issued to the Chinese Hospital in Vancouver, Victoria, and other areas of B.C., 1908-1909; donation and fundraising records, subscription booklets, records of income and expenditures, receipts, Free Miners Certificates, national bonds, 1884-1912; population data; correspondence from the Commander in Shanghai, 1932; minutes of the Chinese Public School; correspondence regarding donations for victims of famines, droughts, and floods in China, and booklets recording donations; records of the Chinese Hospital, including report books on patients, doctor order books and consultation forms, 1956-1976.

The death and burial records series, 1902-1923 consists of: medical certificates of death for Chinese persons in Victoria, BC; and burial permits for Chinese persons in Victoria, BC, including permits issued by the Chinese Benevolent Cemetery Company.

Death and burial records

Series consists of death and burial records of Chinese persons in Victoria, BC. Beginning in 1903, Chinese persons were buried at the Chinese Cemetery at Harling Point in Oak Bay. The series consists of the the following record types:

Medical certificates of death, issued under the Births, Deaths and Marriages Registration Act, for Chinese persons in Victoria. Information collected on death certificate includes: name of deceased, age of deceased, sex of deceased, date of examination, location of examination, cause of death, examiner's name, profession and residence. Entries are in English

Burial permits, in most cases attached to death certificates. Information collected on permit includes: registration number, name of deceased, age in years and months, where born, where died, date of death, day and hour of burial, cemetery row and lot numbers, name of undertaker, burial fee, cause of death and attending physician. Information in English and Chinese, including additional personal information in Chinese, such as more detail about birthplace.

Burial permits issued by the Chinese Benevolent Cemetery Company are addressed to the Caretaker of the Chinese Benevolent Cemetery, also indicate the hour burial is to take place, and are signed by the President.

The letter book consists of Paul's outgoing correspondence, primarily to the Principal and Registrar of McGill University, the B.C. Superintendent of Schools, and Victoria College students and faculty.

This series consists of correspondence and other records pertaining to aspects of Lyons life and work that are not covered in the other series of the fonds. It includes material related to Lyons professional work in the BC Forest Service, BC Parks, and BC Fish and Game, as well as Lyons' work with Toastmasters. There are also some records from Lyons' involvement with the B.C. Museum Association. This series also includes other miscellaneous personal records and some painting and drawings by Lyons. There is no discernible order to these records, but they have been loosely grouped into this series. Records include Lyons' expired passports, maps, brochures, research notes, correspondence, reports, postcards, booklets and pamphlets.

The fonds consists of material relating to Lyons's work as a BC Parks developer, botanist, author, lecturer, independent documentary filmmaker, wildlife photographer, and world traveller. It includes a variety of textual records, moving images, photographic materials, sound recordings, and maps. The fonds has been arranged into six series: 1) published materials; 2) scripts; 3) field notebooks; 4) photographic materials; 5) audiovisual materials; and 6) miscellaneous records.

This series consists of photographic prints, negatives, and slides that Lyons created throughout his lifetime in his various roles as BC Parks employee, botanist, writer, travel guide, worldwide traveller, and father. Prominent subjects in Lyons' photos include travel, scenery, wildlife, and historic sites in British Columbia. Many photos also depict botanical specimens, undoubtedly used in Lyons' field guides. The largest number photographic images come from Lyons' international travels to India, Asia, Central and South America, and elsewhere. Some of these images were published in Lyons' monographs, newspapers, and magazine articles. This series is arranged by format into two subseries: 1) prints and negatives; and 2) slides.

This series consists of records related to Lyons' activities as an author, including book-length publications, newspapers and magazine articles, and covers the period of the early 1950s until his death. Lyons typically addressed British Columbia history, botany, wildlife, parks, and other related topics in his writings. This series includes manuscripts and monographs by Lyons with extensive handwritten revisions. It also contains botanical drawings used to illustrate Lyons' field guides, as well as research notes, newspaper and magazine clippings, correspondence, dust jackets, brochures, pamphlets, reports, photographs, slides, and other textual records pertaining to Lyons' publications. This series consists of three subseries: 1) monographs; 2) field guide illustrations; and 3) newspapers and magazines.

Art Practice

Part of Herbert Siebner fonds

For Herbert Siebner, life and art were inextricably connected. The records he created in his private life as well as in his professional capacity as an artist form the series Art Practice. Records in this series include correspondence with family, friends, galleries, artists, and politicians; inventory lists; photographic prints, negatives and slides—subjects include friends, family, events and works of art; sketches; exhibition marketing materials; and personal writing. Throughout his adult life, Siebner wrote down his dreams, thoughts and philosophical ideas, sometimes by hand in notebooks, often typed on standard and legal sized paper. He retained carbon copies of these typed writings and outgoing letters. Many of the letters and personal missives are in German or a combination of German and English.
Series includes sub-series Limners.
