Maillardville research materials and manuscripts

The series consists primarily of photocopied materials accumulated by Boire relating to the history of Maillardville as well as the research notes he created during the process of writing and publishing his book, "With Hearts and Minds."

Record types include newspaper articles and clippings, newsletters, printed materials, correspondence, recorded interviews, reports, biographies, inventories, handwritten notes, photographs, a map, a thesis, and digital records. The series also includes manuscript copies of "With Hearts and Minds."

Personal Collections

This series consists of records that were original personal fonds and collections acquired and preserved by the Riverview Hospital Historical Society's during its existence. It contains the personal collections of nurses, doctors, general staff, British Columbia's first Provincial Botanist, and a patient at Riverview Hospital. Each file includes records such as study notes, photographs, ephemera, correspondence, newspaper clippings and pamphlets.

The series consists of 15 files, each corresponding to its original creator or donor: Ken Baker, Loretta Barnet, Ultan Patrick Byrne, Jean Campbell, Edna Colvin, John Davidson, Sheila Dumore, William Headridge, Alyce Hockin, Lois Kaldestad, Catherine Murray, Judy Pendry, Dorothy Pocock, Hazel Shepard, and Georgina Bernice Petty.

Administration series

Series consists of four sub-series: A. Vestry records, 1874-1996; B. Annual meeting records, 1962-2009; C. Administrative files, 1927-[ca.2000]; Financial records, 1874-1998.
Vestry records are minute books, Board minutes and other records. Administrative files include correspondence, membership files, secretary’s files, office and general files. Financial records are cash and account books, ledger and general files.

Ministry and programs series

Series consists of six sub-series: A. Services, 1895-2004; B. Marriage, baptism, confirmation and burial, 1874-2008; C. Sunday School, 1924-1939, 1989; D. Missions and outreach, 1975-1999; E. Publications, 1930-2003; F. Fellowship gatherings, after 1947, predominant after 1990.
Services sub-series includes bulletins, sermons, registers, service records and lectionary bible.
Missions and outreach series includes both local and international initiatives. Publications are directories and newsletters.

Committees and groups series

Series consists of four subseries: A. Youth groups, 1920-1949; B. Women’s groups, 1925-1999; C. The Missionary Guild, 1954-2006; D. Other committee and groups, 1930-2005.

Youth groups are the Beaver Club, 1920-1921, and the Young Peoples Department, 1923-1949. Women’s groups are the Ladies Aid, 1925-1983, the Mary and Martha Guild, 1964-1983, and the Women’s Auxiliary, 1983-1999. The Mary and Martha Guild and the Ladies' Aid group merged to become the Womens' Auxiliary in 1983. Women’s groups sub-series consists of minute books, account books, daybooks, financial records, reports, notes and other. Missionary Guild records include minute books, correspondence, photographs, donation records, financial records and publications. Correspondence is administrative and financial and includes letters from missionaries Muriel Harmon and Bob & Sue Pritchard.

Other committee and groups sub-series includes: Management Committee of Cridge Memorial Hall, 1930-1941; Rectory and Repair Fund, 1953-1959; Broadcasting and Radio Fund, 1959-1962; Music Committee, 1969-1971; Worship and Witness Committee, 1970; Building and Finance Committee, 1977-1981, Chancel Guild, 1986-1989, Library, ca.1990, Prayer Group, 1991-1994; COOL coffee house, 1997; Ministry of Verger, 1999-2001; Companionship Guild, 2000; Men's Breakfast, 2000-2003; Thrift Store, 2003-2005.

Buildings and grounds series

Series consists of five sub-series: A. Renovation planning, [ca.1965]-1983; B. Restoration and renovation, 1989-2000; C. Restoration 125 Millennium Project, 1994-2003; D. Projects and campaigns, 2001-2008; E. Photographs of buildings and grounds, [after 1990 and before 2005].

Restoration and renovation sub-series consists of architectural plans and building photographs for Cridge Memorial Hall and the Church of Our Lord, Church of Our Lord Feasability Study records and report, 1992-1994, Restoration & Renovation Committee records, 1993-2000, and other records. The Restoration 125 Millennium Project sub-series consists of administrative and legal records, fundraising and financial records, Community Ministry Campaign files, architectural records, site plans, and project photographs. Includes architectural plans by Martin Golder, Architect, and engineers’ working plans used on site. Projects and campaigns sub-series pertains to church buildings and to Humboldt Valley development.

Topical series

Series consists of three sub-series: A. Biography files, [before 2000]; B. Subject files, [ca.1880-ca.2000]; C. Print material, 1854-2000. Biography files pertain to Bishop Edward Cridge and family and Church of Our Lord ministers and members. Print material sub-series includes five Bibles of past church members: the Cridge Family Bible, published 1854; the Frances Silver Bible, published 1868; the Laundy Family Bible, published 1890; the Olive Buckingham Bible, published 1933; and, the Rev. E. A. (Ted) Follows Bible, published 1993. All Bibles are inscribed and some are annotated.

Writings

Series consists of a draft of Stott’s semi-fictional account of life in the Cariboo in the early 20th century.

Teaching and worship materials

Series consists of records relating to Harrison’s teaching and worship leadership activities at the Vancouver School of Theology. Includes lecture notes, sermons, and orders of service.

Student notes

Series consists of a notebook relating to a course on New Testament criticism, which he was likely enrolled in at Knox College, Toronto.

Sermons

Series consists of records relating to Searcy’s preaching at Crescent United Church (Surrey, BC), South Arm United Church (Richmond, BC), and University Hill Congregation (Vancouver, BC). Records include typescript sermons.

Lectures and addresses

Series consists of records relating to Searcy’s public presentations in various settings, primarily about congregational ministry, to lay and clergy leaders of the wider church. Records include scripts and handwritten notes.

Publications and manuscripts

Series consists of records relating to publications such as books, essays and articles written both by and about Rev. Lydia Gruchy including the graduation thesis of Lydia Gruchy, multiple articles and biographies, interviews, and a school yearbook.

Conference and General Council leadership records

Series consists of records relating to Harrison’s work for The United Church of Canada as BC Conference President and as a member of General Council committees and task groups. Includes reports, correspondence, and speaking notes.

Correspondence

Series consists of correspondence maintained along with Fong Dickman’s sermons. Records include two handwritten letters in traditional Chinese, with the first being a communication between two fellow church members and the second, a letter to the executive of the Wa-Ying Yat Po (Chinese-English Daily Newspaper).

Leadership-related records

Series consists of records relating to Searcy’s leadership as Chair of the Land Claims Campaign, BC Conference, and in the matter of the partnership between University Hill Congregation and the Vancouver School of Theology. Records include correspondence, statistical analyses, meeting notes, copy of an agreement, and promotional materials.

Manuscripts

Series consists of manuscripts created and/or maintained by Rev. Fong Dickman. Records include a 65-page manuscript in traditional Chinese, narrating the story of a fisherman and a logger.

Audio and video recordings

Series consists of videocassette and audiocassette records relating to interviews relating to Lydia Gruchy, her life and story as told in interviews and church broadcasts. These cassettes are copies, with original records held elsewhere.

Publications and manuscripts

Series consists of records relating to Searcy’s written contributions to periodicals and books. Records include draft manuscripts and galley proofs.

Florence Gruchy photographs

Series consists of records relating to Florence Gruchy (sister of Lydia Gruchy) and her experiences living in India as a part of the Women’s Missionary Society. Records include photographs, as well as some textual materials (primarily notes) and artwork.

National church committee working papers

Series consists of three subseries relating to the national church’s Healing Fund Campaign Technical Implementation Group, the United Church’s 75th Anniversary Committee, and the Interchurch Interfaith Committee. Records include correspondence, copies of committee meeting minutes, information packages, financial updates, activity reports, and videos.

Student papers

Series consists of records relating to research, essays, and projects undertaken in fulfillment of requirements toward Searcy’s Bachelor of Arts, Master of Divinity, and Doctor of Ministry degrees.

Audiovisual recordings

Series consists of records relating to Searcy’s worship leadership at University Hill Congregation, presentations at Maritime Conference and Berwick Camp, Nova Scotia, and retirement service and luncheon.

Significant documents

Series consists of records relating to Searcy’s career as student, pastoral minister, lecturer and presenter, writer, and leader in the wider church. Record types include correspondence, news clippings, photographs, academic degrees, curriculum vitae, copies of articles, handwritten letters of appreciation, orders of service, and memorabilia from special events.

Reference material

Series consists of The United Church of Canada Forms of Service (1926) that Smith’s grandfather, Rev. Robert Smith, used during his ministry.
