Izard was sent from Scotland in 1912-1913 along with Norman Yarrow, son of Sir Alfred Yarrow of Yarrows and Company (U.K.) to investigate and visit shipyards and engineering works across North America. Yarrows bought the Victoria firm of British Columbia Marine Company (also known as Bullen's) in 1914. Izard worked for Yarrows and Company (U.K.) from 1906-1913 and for Yarrows Limited (Victoria) until 1957, when he retired as General Manager.
