Biographical history
Born in England, Jack Mitchell started working for Burrard as an office boy in 1919 for $1.07 a day. His work included laying out planking for the St. Roch, passing rivets, working in the riveting office, bolting up, electricians and welders helper, working with the docking crew and in the mould loft and joiners shop. In 1933 he and his stepfather founded a salmon cannery, and he later worked on riverboats on the Yukon. He married Florence, an amateur artist, and had two children, a daughter Sandra and a son Bill. In 1939 he returned to work for Burrard, becoming foreman dockmaster in 1966, and retiring in 1970. His many interests included soccer, the Masons, and learning Spanish. He was also a keen amateur inventor, and after retirement served with Canadian Executive Services Overseas.

Scope and content
Fonds consists primarily of records of Jack Mitchells work for Burrard Dry Dock. They also include some records relating to his membership with the Masons and his seeking patents for his inventions.
