      History

      Henrietta Jean Dorgan, known as Jean Dorgan, was born November 15, 1910 in New Westminster. Jean lived in New Westminster until July 1942 when she decided to join the army as a nurse in the Canadian Army Medical Corps. Before the war she had studied nursing at UBC. Jean started in the army as a lieutenant and by the end of the war became an acting captain. Jean was assigned to the Number 3 Mobile Surgical Unit (a casualty clearing station). She served in both Italy and in Northern Europe. After the war she received her Master’s Degree and taught nursing at the University of Toronto. After working in Ottawa for many years with the Ministry of Health she retired and moved back to New Westminster. She volunteered at Irving House for many years. Jean passed away December 2, 2008.
