        William Albert Johnston as born in Quebec and came to the Cariboo as a teenager. He partnered with his friend, James Reid, in a flourmill and sawmill and later sold his half share to Reid. William was also involved in mining ventures, a shingle mill and brickyard. He called his farm "Fernbrook" for the ferns growing along the south bank of Dragon Creek.
