Dr. John Robert Kellett M.B.E Colonel (Late RAMC); O.St.J; FRCS (Canada) was born in Syracuse, New York, on July 25, 1913, the son of Captain Robert Edward Kellett and Amy Cooper. Kellett was educated in Ireland, with medical training at Trinity College, Dublin. He graduated in 1935 and then specialized in ophthalmology. He served in the Royal Army Medical Corps from 1937 to 1959 in Asia and Europe, rising to the rank of Colonel. He received a Member of the British Empire Medal (M.B.E) from George VI at Edinburgh Castle in 1943 for his role in evacuating hospital patients by ship to Ceylon during the fall of Singapore in World War II. He married Margery Sweetnam in 1948 and remained in the Army until 1959 when he and his young family emigrated to British Columbia. In Canada, John served throughout BC with the Federal Indian Health Service. He retired in 1978, but went to work part-time in private practice in Burnaby until 1989. Dr. Kellett died peacefully in his home in Vancouver on July 16, 2008; nine days shy of his 95th birthday.
