        History

The Dugout Committee was organized at a public meeting held March 25, 1941 in the Delta Municipal Hall, to discuss the provision of a community recreation building for the troops stationed at the Boundary Bay Airport flight training school. The first elected officers were Mrs. Beatrice Butler, President; Mrs. Perry, First Vice President; Mrs. Paterson, Second Vice President; Mrs. Eva Muir, Secretary-Treasurer; Mr. S.W. Fisher, Board of Governor; Mr. J. H. Perry, Board of Governor; Mr. A. Swenson, Board of Governor; Mrs. S. Mowat, Commissary, Mrs. J. Kirkland, House Committee; Mrs. J. Travers, Hostess Committee; and Mr. Paterson as the Honourable President. The committee applied for and received a charter under the War Charities Act in June 1941 that allowed the committee to raise funds. The old King George V High School on Stanley Street (47A Avenue) in Ladner was rented for $1 per year from the School Board and refurbished as a hostess club called the "Ladner Dugout". The "Ladner Dugout" was officially opened on June 2, 1941, and operated until the end of the war when the flight school and airport closed at Boundary Bay. When "The Dugout" closed on September 2, 1945, its assets were transferred to the Delta Branch, Canadian Legion.
