History
In 1964 the Langley Centennial Committee was created as a joint venture between the Corporation of the Township of Langley and the City of Langley to prepare for celebrations commemorating the Canadas centennial in 1967 and to commemorate the 1966 centenary anniversary of the union of the colonies of Vancouver Island and British Columbia under the name British Columbia. The initial committee included: Alexander Campbell Hope (Chairman and MLA for Delta from 1945-1949), Clive Rogers (Vice-Chairman), Derek Doubleday (Secretary-Treasurer), Mayor John C. Conder, Reeve David William Bill Poppy Jr., Harold Dunlop Stafford, Joe C. Breier, Elenore Verna Elizabeth (Vi) Coates (Corresponding Secretary), C. J. Watt, G. E. Loewen, William Dugald McMillan, M. S. W. Mackenzie, and A. Dingley. The Committee itself created additional the following committees to coordinate all the activities: library, park, recreation, pageants/parades/entertainment, school activities, publicity, arts/crafts/souvenirs, catering, and agriculture/horticulture. The Langley Centennial Committee worked on a number of projects to publicize the event at the time and on some projects, such as the library and Williams Park, to permanently memorialize the occasion. The committee was officially dissolved on 28 Nov. 1967.
