Hugh Norman Lidster (known as Norman) was born in 1888 in Barrow-in-Furness, Lancashire, England. He came to British Columbia with his family in 1902. After finishing school Norman worked a variety of jobs before he was called to the bar in 1913. Lidster specialized in municipal law and moved to New Westminster to open his practice. Norman married Jesse and had four children: Freda, Norman, Dorthea and Wally. In 1925, he was elected as a New Westminster city councilor. Lidster also served on the New Westminster Library Committee and served on the Board of Trustees until 1960. From 1929 to 1966, he served on the Provincial Library Board. From 1946 until his retirement in 1957 he served as the first New Westminster City Solicitor. He was one of the city staff given the task of organizing the purchase of Irving House in 1950 and served proudly as chairman of its board until 1958. He was also a member of the 1958 B.C. Centennial Committee and in 1962, he received one of the coveted Trustee Awards of Merit from the Canadian library Trustees’ Association for his work with the New Westminster library committee. Norman passed away in 1967 at the age of 78.
