Biographical history
The Board of Trade was organized in 1949. It was never officially disbanded, but went dormant in the late 1970s. Under the new name of the Chamber of Commerce, this organization started up again in 1981. In 1969, the Board of Trade circulated a petition in support of the local lumber mill, as the mill was the biggest source of employment for Lytton. When complete, the petition was taken to the Minister in Victoria by a delegation including David Manders, Board of Trade Chairman, Lewis McArthur, owner of Spatsum Lumber, Lloyd Dodge, Village Representative, Hotel Owner Joe Perini and restaurant owner Sydney Baker. Eventually the mill was assured a quota, although only a small one.
Custodial history
Upon disbanding, the Lytton Board of Trade donated their records to the Village of Lytton. The records were held by the Village until they were transferred to the museum in 1997.
Scope and content
The fonds consists of the records of the Lytton and District Board of Trade for 1969. Includes correspondence, to and from the Board and the Minister of Lands and Forests in regards to the extension of timber rights for a local logging operation and mill, the Spatsum Lumber Company. Accompanying the correspondence is a copy of the official petition sent to the Minister, listing the signatures and occupations of all local residents in favour of this action. The letters and petition were the outcome of a severe economic downturn, in that if the local lumber mill was not recognized as an 'established licensee' and allotted crown timber rights, it could no longer survive.
