    Biographical history

The first meeting between Joe Chute, Phil Punt and the Village Council to discuss forming a Centennial Committee took place Feb. 6, 1964. On Feb. 12, 1964, the Lytton Canadian Confederation Centennial Committee was formed, with Joe Chute as Chairman and an executive made up of a Vice Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, two directors, a Village Council representative, representatives from 6 local organizations, and three appointees. Letters were sent to all the surrounding Bands asking for representation. The purpose of the Committee was to organize fundraising and centennial projects for the 1966 Centenary of Union of Vancouver Island and British Columbia, and the 1967 Canadian Confederation. The committee was to disband in early 1968. March 2, 1966, the committee offficially became the "Lytton and District Centennial Society", and the project chosen at that meeting was a paved skating rink, recreational area in Hobo Hollow. Government grants were received for the project. The society collected any books, papers, etc. dealing with the history of Lytton and area, and upon disbanding, donated all these collected materials to Kumsheen Secondary School. The society also developed the book "Lytton, a Story in Pictures", and sold copies for 15 dollars each, as a fundraiser. There was a tremendous amount of work involved in this project, under the direction of Lois Van Rooey. Photographs and anecdotes were collected from all over the continent. The society also did a great deal of work trying to locate a copy of a movie that was made in Lytton in 1925, titled "The Winds of Chance". The movie no longer exists but much informative correspondence and many pictures were collected. As well, many dances and celebrations were held throughout the life of the society as fundraisers. On June 12, 1968, it was decided to terminate the society, as originally agreed upon. The society was terminated July 1, 1968.

    Custodial history

Some records were left with the Village Office and were donated to the museum. The balance of the records were in the care of Joe Chute and he donated them to the museum. One completed book was left to the Weekley Estate and donated by Terry and Pat Weekley to the Lytton Museum and Archives.
