        Michael McClure was born in Kansas and educated there and in Arizona and California. He is author of numerous books of poems and plays, including "The Beard". He is one of the best-known poets and playwrights of the so-called "Beat Generation". He began teaching at the California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland in 1962, and has since risen to the rank of Professor.
