    Biographical history

Sarah Agnes Hudson (b. 1842) and Alexander (b. 1841) McGuire had a family of nine children. Their son, Charles Alexander McGuire (b. 1866), homesteaded in Salmon Arm and opened a general store and post office there. "Charlie" died before his 25th birthday in 1892 leaving everything to his mother. The house and store was a desolate looking two-storey log building by the railway tracks. In 1905, Samuel Mathews McGuire, Charlie's brother, built McGuire's store at the corner of Front Street and Alexander Avenue (named for his father). His brother, John David, seems to have taken an active part in the running of the store because many of the records are his material, diaries, ledgers, etc.

Agnes sold parts of her land for development and when she died in 1922, she left only a small portion of the original homestead to her family.
