History
Eunice Ethel (Berry) Mowat was born in 1899. Her father, Ernest Lower Berry moved his family from Vancouver to Ladner in 1913 where he started a grocery and bakery business. Ethel's brothers, Percy and Leslie, opened the Ladner Bicycle Shop in 1915. Later, they added a service station for motor vehicles. Two other brothers, Sidney and Harold, as well as Ethel until her marriage, assisted in the stores. Ethel married Sid Alexander Mowat (1891-1961) in 1921. They had three children, Dorothy (1923- ), Pat(1927- ), and Sid (1931- ). Sid Mowat served in the Air Force during the First World War and again in the Second World War. He earned his living selling lumber and machinery until 1929, when he joined the Shell Oil Agency, and then after 1943, operated his own trucking business. Ethel Mowat was an active member of the community, and was named "Good Citizen of the Year" in 1977. She was a member of the Ladner United Church, the I.O.D.E., the Delta Historical Society, and later the Delta Museum and Archives Society.
