Administrative history
The Murdoch Senior Citizen Centre began operations in 1975 at the J.D Murdoch Centre. The Centre, part of the Richmond Brighouse United Church complex, was built in 1974 when the Church relocated from its original location on Granville Avenue to Bennett Road. The Centre was named after the Reverend J.D. Murdoch, a minister of the United Church. In exchange for a provincial grant, the Church agreed to share the facilities of the Center with the Township of Richmond. The building was leased by the township for use by the members of the Murdoch Senior Citizen Centre. The township allocated to an annual budget to the Centre for administrative and program expenses. From 1979 on, the Murdoch Senior Citizen Centre was headed by an executive board, which was established in response to the Centre's signficant growth in membership since 1975. The Assistant Director of the Centre served as the liaison with the executive board and the Richmond Department of Leisure Services, and was responsible for the Centre's operations and for compliance with the polices of that department. Over the years various committees were also set up at the discretion of the board and the assistant director to deal with particular issues or activities of interest to the Centre. The Murdoch Senior Citizen Centre was established to provide a recreational facility for Richmond residents over age fifty-five. It offered a varity of open and instructional programmes, special events, outings, and overnight trips for its members.
