Biographical history
Muriel Holmes is the daughter of James and Alice Holmes (nee Skinner), and the granddaughter of James Burnard Holmes (J.B. Holmes) an early pioneer of Comox. J.B. Holmes built and ran the Port Augusta Hotel at the head of the Comox Wharf.
Custodial history
Muriel Holmes gave her family documents and photographs to the historian Richard Mackie for research purposes with the instructions to deposit material in the Comox Archives and Museum when finished research. Richard Mackie organized the material into files and delivered the material to the Comox Archives and Museum in October of 2002.
Scope and content
The fonds contain textual records regarding J.B. Holmes and family. Predominantly the fonds consist of records generated by J.B. Holmes. Photographs are predominantly of members of the Holmes family and early pictures of Comox and area. The textual records consist of correspondence, financial records, legal documents, land leases, real estate documents, newspaper clippings and obituaries. The fonds also contain a mercantile diary of J.B. Holmes during his role as store keeper in Comox.
