The Advisory Planning Commission was established by Bylaw in 1958. The Commission advises Council on matters referred to it, such as community planning, zoning and land use. The Commission receives technical assistance from the Engineering, Building Inspection and Fire Departments. Additional expertise is provided by the Department of Planning and Development, which is responsible to the Commission. Members are appointed by Council and include representatives from Council, Board of School Trustees, Parks and Recreation Commission and the Nanaimo Harbour Commission.
