Administrative history
The New Westminster St. John Ambulance Association was a branch of the international St. John Ambulance Association, a humanitarian association which was established in Canada in the late 19th century. The first Canadian branch of St. John Ambulance was established in 1883 in Quebec City to teach first aid courses. Shortly thereafter courses were being offered in Kingston, Ontario. In the next 10 years, St. John Ambulance grew to be a national organization and in 1892 it had 12 branches teaching first aid from coast-to-coast. In 1897 St John Ambulance activities started in Manitoba, British Columbia and the North-West Territories. The New Westminster St. John Ambulance Association was active in raising funds, and purchasing and donating relief supplies.
