Biographical history

Noel Oxenbury Morrow was born in New Westminster on December 25, 1918. Noel Oxenbury did not have formal swimming training as a child. She learned how to swim by watching other children. Her doctor did not allow her to swim due to health reasons, and she was only allowed to swim at the age of six or seven. She was asked by Crescent Beach Swim Club to train for 1934 Nationals under Norman Cox. Her early accomplishments included winning the backstroke at the national championships in 1934 and being selected for British Empire Games in the same year, for which the New Westminster residents raised $200 for her to go to the Games. She went on to compete at the 1936 Berlin Olympics. After returning from Berlin, she joined the Vancouver Amateur Swim Club. She won the backstroke again at the 1938 Nationals and at the 1938 Empire Games in Australia, she won Gold in the 4×110 yd freestyle relay. She was the women’s Canadian champion from 1934 until 1940 in the 50, 100 and 200-metre backstroke. She eventually stopped competing and taught swimming for seven years. Later in life, she began competing in the World Masters Games and in 2009, at the Masters in Australia, she won a gold medal for the 100 metre backstroke. She died in 2012.
