    Biographical history

Port Essington was a community begun in 1871 by Robert Cunningham and people form Kitsumkalum and Kitselas, near Terrace. It became a fishing centre and during the construction of the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway was a major commercial centre. Eclipsed by Prince Rupert, it reverted to a fishing community until fire destroyed most of the buildings in 1964. The section of town where most native people lived was called a Special Indian Reserve, since it had not been set by the federal government, but was on land donated by Robert Cunningham. The people living on the reserve received similar delivery of services from the Department of Indian Affairs through an Indian Agent as did "regular" reserves.
