        History

The Prince Rupert Daily News began as a four-page weekly under the name The Optimist, first published on July 1, 1909. By September 1910, the paper had grown to an eight-page daily. On May 1, 1911, A. M. Manson and T. D. Patullo bought the business and changed the name of the paper to the Prince Rupert Daily News. From 1914 - 1929, the paper was owned by city alderman, F.G. Dawson. After his sudden death on October 17, l929 when he was struck by a train, his shares in the paper were bought by provincial minister of education H.G.T. Perry of Prince George. In 1947 the Prince Rupert Daily News bought out its competitor, The Empire, and in 1957, the News was bought by John Magor. Magor sold the News to Northwest Publications in 1965. Sterling Publications bought the business on December 1, 1971, and in 2006 it was sold to Glacier Ventures. In July 2010, the Daily News was sold to Black Press and the last issue was published on July 16, 2010.
