Fonds - Queen's Committee fonds

The Enderby Queen contest was introduced by the Lions Club in 1948. Three or four candidates were picked and the winner was determined by the sale of tickets. In the 1960s Vera Towers made dresses for the girls and ensured they had floats for the parades. In 1971 Joan Bond worked with the Enderby & District Chamber of Commerce to establish rules and find sponsors for queen candidates. The queen and princess represented Enderby for the Vernon Winter Carnival and the IPE for the first time in 1971. In 1974 a group of women loosely formed the Queen's Committee and developed a program to help the young queen candidates with personal hygiene, deportment, speech making and modeling. They requested $50 from each sponsor for expenses. The queen and princess were elected in April; she would serve until the following April and work with new candidtates from September until April. The committee escorted the queen and princess to various functions to represent the community. Committee members changed over the years. In 1981 the committee invited past queens to the coronation and each reminisced about their year as royalty. In 1992 the Queen's Committee chose to become an ambassador program, inviting males to join the candidates. And in 1993 the Queen's Committee folded, due to lack of volunteer commitment.
