    Administrative history

The Richmond Heritage Advisory Committee was formed in 1984, after discussions regarding the formation of such a committee were held in 1979, at which time it was agreed that the Richmond Municipal Council required an agency to address the many requests for financial support of heritage projects, and the many requests relating to the designation and/or acquisition of heritage sites and buildings. The Richmond Heritage Advisory Committee, an ad hoc committee, was formed to provide a coordinated approach to these varied heritage issues. The committee is answerable to the Richmond Municipal Council through the Planning and Development Services Committee. Past chairmen of the Richmond Heritage Advisory Committee have included George Brandak, Val Patenaude and Eleanor Harper.

        General note

The Richmond Heritage Advisory Committee was formed in 1984 with the passing of the Municipal Heritage Advisory Committee Bylaw No. 4324. The formation of the committee resulted from ongoing discussions beginning in 1979, at which time it was agreed that the Richmond Municipal Council required an agency to address the many requests for financial support of heritage projects, as well as requests relating to the designation and/or acquisition of heritage sites and buildings. The Committee supervised the creation of two heritage inventory projects, as well as advising Council on heritage policy for the municipality. In 1998, following changes to provincial heritage legislation, the Heritage Commission Establishment Bylaw No. 6873 was adopted by Council, which repealed earlier Bylaw No. 4324, and which itself was later repealed with the adoption in 2005 of Richmond Heritage Commission Bylaw No. 7906. The Richmond Heritage Commission has been mandated to advise Council on heritage conservation matters and to promote heritage in the municipality.
