Biographical history
From 1987 to 1989, the School District 68 History Project Committee of the Nanaimo-Ladysmith Retired Teachers' Association undertook a project to document the history of schools and education in the Nanaimo area. Funded as a New Horizons Project by Health and Welfare Canada, the project had five stated purposes: "1) to preserve the history of local schools; 2) to encourage and direct seniors and others in obtaining materials and facts related to forty public schools in Nanaimo and Ladysmith (School District No. 68); 3) to organize and catalogue all materials collected; 4) to provide the local museums and the School Board of District No. 68 with an inventory of all school history materials; and, 5) in cooperation with Nanaimo and Ladysmith city administration provide a plaque commemorating one or two very early schools, perhaps the earliest in each area."
Custodial history
Scope and content
The fonds consists of records documenting the administration of the project as well as reference files, oral histories, and a collection of historical photographs acquired during the course of the project. Records document the growth and development of schools in the Nanaimo-Ladysmith area and the recollections of former teachers and administrators in the school system. The fonds is arranged in four series: Project Administration (1987-1989), Reference (1939-1989), Oral history (1987-1989), and Photographs (ca. 1900-1979).
