        History

The society, known as SPEC, was established in 1970 and was affiliated with other SPEC organizations. Its purpose was to promote environmental awareness in the Cowichan Lake area. An organizational meeting was held January 1970 with John Clark as the temporary chairman. Thirty-six people attended. The first executive meeting was held February 8, 1970 with the committees set up and various related topics being discussed. SPEC (locally) had between 50 - 100 members with general meetings held monthly and executive meetings held when necessary. We are unsure when the Society ceased to exist.
