History
The formation of the Sun Peaks Historical Society was initiated by Nancy Greene Raine in May of 2021 and incorporated as a non-profit Society under the BC Societies Act in July 2021. Its founding members were Nancy, Archivist Peggy Leduc, and local history enthusiasts Kristin Passmore and Candise White, as well as Municipal Council Representatives Ines Popig and Mario Pozza. In August 2021 the Sun Peaks Resort Corporation donated a temporary physical space to provide archival storage.
Geographical and cultural context
The geographical context of the SPHS is Sun Peaks and its surrounding areas including the village of Whitecroft and Heffley-Louis Creek valleys. Culturally, the SPHS considers the geographical area's uses by indigenous cultures, early agricultural, logging, and mining settlers and the areas most recent use as a recreational area for outdoor sport (including skiing and mountain biking) and tourism. Finally, the SPHS considers the development of the area into one of the Provinces' newest municipalities.
