Biographical history
The Victoria Fair was organized by the Faculty of Fine Arts (Dean, Dr. Peter Garvie) of the University of Victoria for three consecutive years, 1969-1971, to produce a summer cultural programme featuring theatre, music and visual art events. Other directors of the Fair were Dr. Ralph Allen, Chair of Department of Theatre; Mr. Philip Young, Chair of Department of Music; and Mr. Robert Cothran and Dr. Wandalie Henshaw, both of the Department of Theatre. The programme was discontinued in 1971 due to the dispersal of some of the principal directors to other institutions, including Dr. Garvie, and a lack of financial support. Victoria Fair offered a chance for the local community to experience a talented variety of local and imported talent, and on the whole was very well received by the critics.
Custodial history
The files were transferred to Information Services after the programme was discontinued, and later transferred to the Archives in 1980, after amalgamation with the IS Victoria Fair publicity files.
