Biographical history
The Wah Hing Land Company was formed ca. 1925 from the Lung Yick Company in response to high rent increases in Nanaimo's Chinatown. The company was a mutual organization that purchased seven acres of land from the Western Fuel Company on the bluffs overlooking Mount Benson and Harewood, and sold shares to 4,000 Chinese across Canada for five dollars each. The old Chinatown was then dismantled and moved over the railway tracks, and erected on the new land.
