        History

Annabel Yates is one of the grandchildren of Captain Albert Francis Yates and Sarah Kinnear (nee Nelson) Yates. The Yates owned property at the corner of Wallace and Fitzwilliam Streets (now known as Cappy Yates Park). The Yates had three children: Arthur Fitzgerald Yates, born in Auckland, New Zealand in 1883; Ethel Annabell Yates, born at Port Louis, Island of Mauritius, September 9, 1879; and Charles, who died in infancy and was buried at sea. Arthur Fitzgerald Yates married Beatrix Margaret Planta on April 14, 1914. Annabel Yates is one of their children. Her siblings include Nelson and Marion. The Yates residence, known as "Hillsboro", at 311 Wallace Street was demolished in the 1970s. In 1988, the property was dedicated as "Cappy Yates Park" by the Performing Arts of Nanaimo. Annabel's mother died in 1974 in Vancouver at the age of 82 and her father died in Nanaimo in 1984 at the age of 101. Planta Road is named after Annabel's grandfather Jeffrey Planta and Planta Park is named after her uncle Albert Planta.
