Fonds M2000.24.0 - Cariboo Certified Seed Potato Growers Association fonds

Certified Seed Potatoes first began about 1927 or 28, to provide disease free potatoes. Farmers in the Quesnel area felt this region was suitable for such an opportunity and contacted the federal government. The area for the certified seed potatoes covered from Soda Creek to somewhere between Kersley and Quesnel. The townsfolk of Quesnel were not interested, therefore the association stayed out of the municipal area. It is not know how many members were included in the association's endeavour, but at their peak, there were 900 acres of seed potatoes being grown in the area. The Government Inspector for the region was Ted Cole, and he worked diligently for thirty years, from 1951 to 1981. It is said that Chuck Beath may have been the association's first secretary, as the family had the "Beath and Foyle" farm south of Quesnel.
