    Administrative history

The UBC Department of Medicine provides teaching to undergraduate students, medical students, and graduate students, as well as postdoctoral training for specialist physicians and Ph.D. scientists. Clinical services are delivered by teams consisting of physicians, counsellors, and support staff: primary physicians and other specialists to any of nearly 350 faculty members with specialist credentials. In particular, the Department provides research, teaching, and clinical services related to the nature, cause and prevention of adult diseases -- it is in the forefront of this field in Canada, representing 17 subspecialties and comprehensive training programs. The Department of Medicine was established in 1949 as one of the founding departments within the Faculty of Medicine and is now the Faculty's largest department. As of 2007, the Department consists of 16 divisions: Allergy and Immunology, Cardiology, Community Internal Medicine, Critical Care, Endocrinology, Gastroenterology, Geriatric Medicine, Internal Medicine, Hematology, Infectious Diseases, Medical Oncology, Nephrology, Neurology, Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, Respiratory Medicine and Rheumatology.

    Custodial history

    Scope and content

The fonds consists of records documenting the functions, activities, and programmes of the UBC Department of Medicine and its constituent divisions. Also, because of the close working relationship between the Department and the Vancouver Hospital & Health Sciences Centre Department of Medicine -- the two were led by the same department head for much of the 1990s -- some VHHSC records were kept with the UBC files in the department offices; they remained interfiled when the records were transferred to the University Archives. The records include correspondence, reports, minutes, and published materials. The fonds is arranged in the following series: Central Files, Annual Reports, Divisions, Department and Division Reviews, Vancouver Hospital & Health Sciences Centre (VHHSC), and Governments and Associations.
